What Is Seborrheic Dermatitis

The dandruff and the seborrheic dermatitis are one of the most widely spread pathologies of the head skin. Nowadays they are considered different expressions of the dermatitis. The seborrheic dermatitis is the disease that occurs because of the dysfunction of the sebum production and the change of its composition. The disease expresses itself the most in the places where are many sebaceous glands – hairy part of the head, face, chest, back.  Also it occurs near the ears and inside of them, around the nostrils and eyebrows.  It shows itself through the skin peeling, itch, reddening of the infected surfaces. The skin is covered with flakes, dry or greasy, that may have grey or yellow color. If it occurs on the hairy part of the head, these places usually itch.

The seborrheic dermatitis occurs not only because of the sebaceous gland dysfunctions. It may happen also because of the fungus that occurs as the result of the hormonal, metabolic, neurogenic or genetic pathologies. The quality of the cosmetic hygiene means also influences the chemical balance of the skin. The disease can lead to the loss of hair strength or even amount.

The causative agent of the seborrheic dermatitis occurrence is a fungus called Malassezia. Its excessive multiplication and development into the pathogenic form causes structural pathologies of the skin. The change of the sebaceous glands work creates perfect conditions for the fungus to multiply excessively. Very often it happens in a puberty period when the hormonal system undergoes changes. Also regular stresses can cause such pathologic changes in the organism.

The treatment of the seborrheic dermatitis can perform into several directions. The preparations of anti-inflammatory, anti-fungoid, exfoliating and complex action are prescribed. Also a patient needs to use special means of hygiene that contain ketoconazole not rarer than twice a week to perform a complex treatment of the disease.
