The cervical ectropion (also called ectopy or erosion although the last word isn’t correct) is among the most common reproductive health abnormalities in women of childbearing age. This disease, like many other gynecological diseases, can develop completely unnoticed by a woman. However, it can also show some symptoms, and sometimes they may be really annoying.
This condition is easy to misunderstand. Let’s discuss the most common myths about it and figure out what exactly is a cervical ectropion and what is important about it.
It’s dangerous for a woman’s health and requires treatment
The condition of cervical ectropion can’t be called dangerous, however, it is associated with certain risks. It is an inflammation, and each inflammation increases the chances for complications and infection. If the condition doesn’t bring discomfort to a woman, the treatment isn’t necessary. It can’t even harm a pregnant woman and her fetus.
However, sometimes the symptoms influence the quality of a woman’s life. In such cases, the procedure of cauterization may be appointed. Sometimes, a woman may need several of them, if the condition comes back. However, it’s common for the ectropion just disappears without any intervention.
It is linked to a cervical cancer
This myth was born due to the similarity of the cervical ectropion’s look to a look of the lesion that appears at the beginning stage of cervical cancer. They are NOT the same. Cervical ectropion doesn’t cause cancer, either. They may look similar but that’s all.
So how do you tell them apart? The answer is simple – Pap test. It can not only detect cancer but also any changes that may lead to it in the future. This simple and effective test is enough to clear up the situation.
Virgins can’t have cervical ectropion
This condition can even be diagnosed in little children. One of the ectropion’s causes is bacterial imbalance inside the vagina. This may influence the cervical epithelium just the same way as mechanical damage does.
Also, the lesions on cervical epithelium can appear due to hormonal imbalance. This condition can be caused by very different factors and isn’t connected to any moral aspect. No physical condition should ever be the ground to judge anyone.
Cervical ectropion is the process of erosion
This word, often associated with the condition of cervical ectropion is actually incorrect. The abnormal process taking place in the epithelial cells of the cervix is NOT erosion. It’s just the growth of cells in the wrong place and it isn’t a destructive process.
Cervical ectropion is linked to sexually transmitted diseases
The ectropion itself isn’t a symptom of any STD. However, it doesn’t exclude that you may have it. An inflammation being a risk factor for infection may increase your chances to have STDs. Therefore, it’s a good idea to go through STD testing regularly. It’s still a good idea even if you have no cervical ectropion, either.
As you can see, the condition isn’t as dangerous as you may have heard. The key words here are control, attention to your body and immediate reaction to any bothersome symptoms that you may feel.
