Also filling helps to prevent the development of cavities. There are different types of materials used in the process of filling. Each of them has its pros and cons. Which one to choose?

First it should be mentioned that there is no material that will perfectly suit for everybody. There are many individual factors that determine the choice. It depends on the amount of work required, if there is allergy on some materials, in what part of the mouth the work must be done and, finally, what price you can afford. These are the materials used for cavity filling:

  1. Metal fillings. They are made of gold and silver. Of course, golden fillings will cost much more than silver ones. These metals are friendly to a gum tissue and serve for a long time. The esthetic look of them is doubtful, so the best idea will be to use them on teeth that are out of the smile zone.
  2. Amalgam fillings. They are very durable and not very expensive. Their dark color is also far from esthetic so they are also better no to be set on the front teeth.
  3. Composite fillings. They can be matched to the natural color of your teeth. It is not the best decision for big fillings, because they are not very resistible. They can be easily dyed by food, get damaged or wasted soon.
  4. Porcelain fillings. Used for the big amount of filling. They also can be matched to the color of your teeth but will last much longer. Besides, their color will be not spoiled with time. They are expensive but definitely worth that money.

Only the doctor may say whether you need filling or not and what types will suit better. You are to choose between them.
